Beyond Muesums, Cathedrals and Castles

Selecting sights and activities from the cornucopia of Europe often results in a list of: 8 museums, 6 cathedrals, and half a dozen castles with a mountain peak or two thrown in for good measure. As you progress through the list you start wondering when you signed up for the History & Art Appreciation Class (with no recess) and find your self falling asleep mid-lecture. With a little planning, you can alleviate this dilemma.

There is a wide range of activities to be found in Europe. Sprinkle in some that give you that "holiday" feeling. Spectator and participatory sports and games are abundant. Do you like foot ball? Check out a rugby or soccer match. Race enthusiasts can see some of the biggies—Grand Prix & Tour de France. Play backgammon, bridge, checkers and chess with ardent Europeans. Try horseback riding "English" style anywhere. Row a boat, fish a lake, ride a luge, fly a kite, wind surf, or shoot the tube on the S. French Coast.

Born to shop? Try window shopping after dark when the crowds have gone home. For inside store browsing, mornings are best. While on a "recreation shop" check out houseware and tool departments, auto show rooms, and real estate agencies and "chat" with clerks. Get a feel for the local cost of living.

Music lovers have no end of things to do in Europe from seeing their favorite American Rock group in the summer to Opera in the fall and winter. Jazz abounds year round. Look for local choirs and organ recitals to get the full impact of Cathedral acoustics. Or create your own "act" and become part of the street scene entertainment. Europeans love American performers.

Check "European Events" sites on TERC Guides to various countries for some up coming happenings. Write or Phone Travel Offices before you go or check out Tourist information offices as you arrive in each city for your favorite activitiy. TERC has most countries current Special Events Calendars as well as other resources for fun and unusual activities. Tell TERC about your favorites?
