Winter Travel: Prepare Mentally for BAD Weather!
by: Jackson Goo

TERC volunteer, Jackson Goo, related he has had 2 great winter trips—but the last one was tough. "I was sold on winter travel because my first two trips were terrific. Besides having great travel experiences--I got fantastic RT ticket prices such as: to Paris (from Honolulu) for $298 a couple of years ago--then I trained to Czech & Poland. A year before that I paid $498 to the Continent. Last year to London I paid $479. To find these deals I constantly watch the news papers and keep in regular contact with several travel agencies."

I thought winter travel would be difficult when planning my first trip because of the cold weather—but it was easier than I expected. Was I surprised when my last year. Feb. trip to Britain was so hard! It started in Wales with their worst snow storm in 10 years--isolating us several days with no power & frozen pipes. From here the trip didn't get much better! Trains weren't running--Ferries to Ireland was closed. Chunnel ran irregularly. Of course sights with their 10-3 winter hours were shut too. The family I stayed with had a coal stove we dried snow soaked clothes over, hovered around & cooked meals on. It was like winter camping in a house—candles, batteries, and hot water bottles to keep us warm in bed. I finally abandoned my Brit & Ireland plans & fled to the icy rain of Belgium where it was a little more comfortable.

It takes allot more clothing for a winter trip—but most of it was on me once I got to Europe. (even in bed!!!) On past trips it was enough to wear 3 or 4 layers which included a full set of thermal Long Johns (from Sears) , T-shirt, turtle neck, sweater, and a zippered London Fog Coat—not water proofed. A hat, gloves, wool socks and rain boots were essential. But it wasn't enough for this last trip. The cold in Britain is just wetter & cuts to the bone. Although the temperatures for my Czech trip were lower, the cold (& snow) was "drier"and easier to handle. (The hostel was comfortable there).

Would I do another winter trip??? I'm still debating! My recommendations to anyone planing to are: Don't get isolated in the country side in bad weather, take lots of warm, water proof clothing & mentally be prepared for BAD weather & short days.

Jackson Goo, Thanks for your continued contributions. A thin blooded gal like me will take your tips & comments to heart. Mele
