Insure?  -  or Not to Insure?

Travel Insurance is a way to buy off the considerable financial risk of travel. These risks include: accidents, illness, missed flights, canceled tours, lost luggage, emergency evacuation, and getting home if you die.  Your risk depends on how much of your trip is prepaid--the kind of air ticket purchased, your state of health (and the state of health of family members left at home), where you are traveling, value of your luggage, your current health coverage, the solidarity of the tour company you are using as well as the airline.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Did travel agent explain options to me?
  • What are my chances of needing it?
  • Am I leaving a potential reason at home that could interrupt my trip? (i.e. sick family member or small children)
  • Can I handle the risks without insurance?
  • Are some of my insurance needs covered by resources I already have? (CC, Health, Homeowners, Pass Protection, etc.)
  • Should I purchase a custom Plan?
BELOW are some established travel insurance companies.
  • Click on their website for information on types of travel insurance each company offers.
  • Please read the insurance brochure of each company CAREFULLY before purchasing any insurance.
  • Make sure the policy you're buying covers the countries you will be traveling in
  • Check your current HOMEOWNERS, AUTO, MEDICAL AND CREDIT CARDS for existing travel insurance coverage.

Click on websites for information on types of travel insurance each company offers. Obtain their brochure and read carefully before ordering.
